  1. On the PAY line write the name of the company and write ONLY after the name. It will already be stamped account payee only. ie write pay HOMEBASE ONLY

Fill in rest of cheque as usual, write your address on reverse and any order reference.

You can also write your 16 digit debit card number on reverse to GUARANTEE the cheque. Means they get paid even if you do not have enough funds.

Send in with slip and all should be good.

  2. You are right to ask this question if you are not sure, because a cheque that isn't completed properly may be returned or a dishonest person (receiving the cheque) may make amendments.

Please see this link which includes a picture of a sample cheque.  It explains how to complete it step by step using animated media.

  3. On the left bit of the book you write (for your records) the date you wrote the cheque, who you're writing it to, so the name of the magazine company, and the amount you're writing it for.  On bills you'll get an invoice number and it's worth putting that on the left bit that you keep too.  THen there's a perforated line, tear the cheque there to seperate it from the book, and on the top line write the person you have to write the cheque to, this will probably be the name of the magazine unless it tells you differently.  Then on the line under it, write in WORDS the amount that you want to give them, for example ONE HUNDRED POUNDS ONLY.  Write the amount clearly and in capitals, and write the word ONLY after the amount.  Any space on the second and third line you haven't used, draw a line through, this will stop anyone from altering your cheque.  THen date it in the date box (probably top right) and sign it at the bottom, probably bottom right.  Also write the amount in numbers i.e £100.00 in the box.  On the back of the cheque, write your name, address and if they ask for a debit card, write the long debit card number, expiry date, and issue number if it has one.

  4. If you are writing a cheque, PLEASE make sure you know the money will be in your account when it is due to come out! Depending on the bank you are with, there are high costs if the cheque bounces. If you have a cheque book, you can use a Debit card.

On the Payee line, write the name of the company.

On the amount line, write in words the amount of the purchase and then if there is any space left, just put a line through any space left.

Make sure you date and sign the cheque. You can also write your name and address on the back of the cheque (which is always a good idea) especially if ordering something on a coupon. They can then be matched if anything goes astray.

Don't forget to put the amount in £'s!
