  1. depends on the  situation--were you absent the whole day, or for a longer period of slightly more documentable (ie justifiable) illness? or was it something like you were scared to take the test and didn't go that day,  something that happened just for that day for his or her class (which is harder to get mercy for of course)? You might need to see what %age of grade is this test going to represent and just do everything you can to bring up grade in other areas like class participation, homework, etc. And be careful teachers do not like excuses that sound like they are made up or indicating a person who always tries to get out of things....

with all due respect,  the answer provided to you before this one has some serious errors in english/syntax.

Also, some people writing questions in this special ed site have disabilities or accomodations for them at school. If this is true, it's not like you should play the "it's hard for me so I didn't go!" card, but are there honestly areas that were impacted by your situation? if so, your teacher might already know about this in advance--and may be more likely to give you leniency (not a free pass) about taking test later if he or she is already being helpful about accomodations you might need. for example my son is allowed extra time for tests. but you can't just ask for this; it has to be part of your plan. be careful! don't lie in the letter, and sometimes a letter (ie email so it is quick) is be better so the teacher  can think about it and not be put on the spot. you could say something like:

Dear Prof (or Mr. or Mrs.) ________,

I apologize for not being in class to take the test. I realize that you are not obligated to give me any special treatment, and that is was wrong for me to have missed the test.

I wanted to ask if it might be possible for me to take it later today (ie don't be asking for more time 'cause it's already unfair to others). I certainly don't expect it to be the same test, and would be happy to substitute another project. I am concerned about my work in your class and I regret that I made a bad decision that day which lead to my not taking the test.

I will call you to  see if this might be possible.

(**** you should be specific & DO NOT LIE)

In any case if the test cannot be taken I am wondering if you might accept an extra project or other work to allow me to show you that I do take your class seriously despite the poor judgment I showed & mistake I made in being afraid (****or whatever) to take the test.
