  1. Most Italians will never leave their house unless they are convinced that they look well.  What they consider 'well' depends on each person's interpretation of fashion.

Kids tend to want to look very American (based on what they think 'American' looks like).  They will wear Nike trainers, jeans, printed t-shirts, and if they have a backpack, it must be of the brand 'Invicta'.  They have a love for Nike and Timberland branded products.

Adult males (Under 50ish) are usually seen wearing very nice, clean jeans or slacks (never shorts) always with a belt, casual button-down shirts, and nice shoes or deck shoes.  You will often see them wearing polo style shirts.  They are ALWAYS coordinated, and they are extremely brand conscious.  Many have a love for Timberland shoes.

Adult females tend to dress fashionably casual, and are very brand-aware.  nice dresses, almost never jeans, and never in a t-shirt.  Prada, Gucci, Fendi, etc. all fit the bill.  Hair must always be perfect.

Older men tend to wear slacks and button-down shirts.  They are not nearly as brand conscious, but rarely leave the house if they are not perfectly coordinated.

Older women tend to wear more subtle clothing.  Simple dresses with flower patterns, simple purse, etc.  But hair is always perfect.

Even the most rural farmer will never 'go to town' unless they are dressed in what we would consider 'our Sunday best'.

With respect to the work-force, Italians dress far more formally than Americans do for work.  Think about a Wall Street brokerage, and you pretty much have the Italian work dress code down.

Then there is a difference between North and South.  The further south you go, the more simple it gets.  The further north you go and the more 'out there' fashion will get.  Additionally, in the cities people tend to be much more fashionable than in smaller towns.  Common sense, of course.

Also:  The concept of "Your Sunday Best" still exists in Italy.  People tend to dress up more before leaving the house on Sunday.

But know this:  A persons appearance, coordination, and general sense of fashion and personal presentation are EXTREMELY important to ALL Italians.  There is no such concept of running out to the market in your sweats.

In fact, I know a guy who will get dressed and wear his tie just to take out the garbage for 2 minutes.  This attitude is not out of the ordinary.

  2. I'm Italian, and I totally agree with videotutorialzone.

You can have some differences between the biggest cities and the provincial towns, but generally speaking, here people tend to dress like in a Hollywood movie of the 50s. ;-)

Even among freakish youngsters you have to observe strictly the rules of their particular fashion.

  3. A bit like Joe Pesci

  4. sempre alla moda ragazzi!!!!!!

    (always in fashion)

    ciao!

  5. In a word: WELL. But I can give you the biggest NO according to the Italian Style:

    - NO white sox's

    - NO sandals if is not really hot

    - NO pans that don't reach or cover a little bit your shoes

  6. It depends.  They tend to be a LOT more fashionable than Americans.  The younger Italians tend to wear jeans and sneakers, but they have to be fashionable.  A big no for Italians is wearing white socks with black pants.  You rarely see Italians (especially men) wearing shorts, white t-shirt and flip flops....unless they are at the beach.

    I live in Italy.

  7. Italians dress very nicely.  Never casual (no jeans, shorts, t-shirts, sneakers).  And, they do like to wear black.

  8. nobody Else dresses like them

    no.1 in the world

  9. They dress very, very well. Many visitors are intimidated since the Italians are always at the height of fashion!
