  1. There's an input method built into Windows. You don't need a special keyboard, although in Japan there's a different keyboard with a few extra hotkeys to turn the input method on and off and switch between hiragana, katakana and kanji.

  2. Normally through software, or so I thought.

  3. It's an add-on feature. Language support is installed and you get that language bar appearing at the bottom of the screen (movable to anywhere on the screen). I use the international standard English keyboard, and this is how I do it:

    - I click on that language bar and choose the Japanese Language option.

    - Then I choose the Input option (hiragana, katakana, etc)

    - I type the word as how they are pronounced.

    - I press the space bar to convert the typed word into the kanji (press again if necessary until the desired kanji comes out).

    - I press the Enter key to choose that kanji.

    - If kanji is not necessary, I skip the space bar and just press the Enter key.

    That's basically it.

(here come the thumbs down, yahoo!)

  4. Software and a specially designed keyboard.

    You should've seen the typewriters.
