How do jewellery shops know if they have bought stolen jewellery or not?

When you sell jewelry, for any decent amount of money, you have to provide the jeweler's appraisal from where you bought it, or insurance information. Or some sort of receipt. The lower class stores, don't ask for that information, they probably are buying stolen jewelry.

They ask for the bill! If you cannot submit it and they really want to buy it, they ask for your information like ID and social security number to be able to easily trace you if your jewelery is stolen.

They can NEVER be certain when they buy, but all police depts have pawn shop details which check in with them to inspect their merchandise to see if any stolen mdse. turns up. If it does, it is the jewelry's store's loss.

People who have jewellery worth insuring are urged to photograph it and keep receipts. After a burglary the police try to circulate the photos to likely jewellers who keep them handy when being offered stock from a less known source.

I think being in the jewellery trade, they would be buying from reputable suppliers, gold and diamond merchants etc.

Only second hand shops need to worry about whether an item has been stolen or not I would expect.

Jewellry generally has a unique serial number given to each item, and the details of their histories can be found by the jewellers by searching the serial number.
