  1. If you bought it in a little cup - then it's probably male.  If you bought it at a chain store I'd say it's 99% chance of being a male.  As with most fish in the industry the males have brighter and more colorful markings so are more in demand by the general public.  Most fish stores don't even carry females.  If they do carry them, they cost more and are usually marked Female.

BTW - yes they can survive in a cup - just like you can survive in a very small room.  Be a friend and give your boy at least 5 gallons.

  2. if its got long flowing fins, its a male. the females have very short fins and you most likely dont have one as most people dont find them as attractive as the males, so the petshops dont usually carry them.

  3. Males have long flowing fins and females have short fins. People say females are not colorful, but they come in a wide variety's of colors. At the moment I have a deep blue girl and a red one.

  4. Most males have very large vibrantly colored fins.

Females have shorter fins, somewhat colorful, but not as colorful as males, I did just buy a beautiful female that was a bright blue/purple so i guess some are nicely colored as well. The easiest eay to differentiate is by fin size.

  5. males have longer fins than females.

females have really short fins compared to the males.

  6. Well, Males tend to have longer fins than a female, so if it's fins are long, it's a boy. Some males have short fins, but those are a particular type of betta. Also females tend to be less colorful than males. Do you have a pic you could put up?

  7. it is SO easy...males have long and beautiful fins and females have short fins like some regular fish

  8. the males will have long, pretty fins, and the females will just have short fins.

  9. Ok, if it has the long wavy, and flowing tail, its a boy, if it has a short stubby tail it is a girl.

  10. Male betas have longer fins than female bettas. It doesn't really matter too much about what  color it is. Which one does it look like?

  11. As long as you have a beta splendins you can tell by the fins:  long and flowing = male; short = female.  If you have a different type of beta however, sometimes even males have short fins.  If it's the type of beta most commonly sold in pet stores it's a splendins.  You used to be able to tell by how colorful the fish is also, but in recent years breeders have created really colorful females, so that doesn't really work anymore.  I have some very colorful females.

  12. The male betas have longer flowing fins than the females, who have short ones that don't really flow.
