Landfills create methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas, as the micro-organisms breakdown and metabolize the waste underground.  Some believe that high temperature incineration is better for the environment for this reason.

- A brown liquid called 'leachate' that leaches out of the sites can contaminate waterways if not properly disposed of

- Heavy metals from things like batteries can go into the soil

- Chemicals from household products (like cleaning products) can leach into soil/waterways

- Some may say they are 'visual' pollution as they look unattractive or sound pollution as the machines can be noisy

However, most of these points (except the CO2 and methane being released) can be avoided if the landfill is well managed.
