How do letters get sent through the mail?

i've been wondering about it for a while now, and google isn't helping at all. does anyone know the step by step procedures?

  1. The first thing that happens is the postal carrier comes to get the mail, and from there it is taken to the local distribution center (post-office). From there, based on the destination zip-code, computers that the USPS uses determines where it goes next. This process is usually repeated until it reaches its destination. If you are, for example, sending a letter to Washington D.C., once it reaches Washington D.C. that local post office determines which postal carrier runs the route that the letter's destination is on and gives it to them for them to deliver.
