Question:

How do mentally handicapped people think?

I'm not trying to be mean or trying to insult or offend anyone, but out of curiosity, how do mentally handicapped people think?

When we talk, the voice in our heads usually mimick our real voice. Some mentally handicapped people talk with weird [no offense intended], or different voices, do they think the same way they talk? How do they picture things? Do they think the same things an average person do, but are unable to say so?

Any information is greatly appreciated!

  1. There is NO way we could OBJECTIVELY answer this unless we experience the same things ourselves.

In general, people with intellectual disability hear and see the same as what we hear and see but they process information slower than an average person. How slow depends on the severity of the disability. Some may not even receive any input at all. FOR EXAMPLE , It's like... they may hear sound (what you are speaking) but the brain can not process it so it is totally meaning less sound (in severe cases).

It all depends on which part of the brain is damaged. Some people can read but when it comes to logic and planning - they have no idea because THAT part of the brain does not work well. They find the task hard..... just like .. when WE first learn a difficult task. But whereas we eventually learn it, they are stuck at that point.

I have a friend who has intellectual disability. He can look after himself well and live semi-independently. HE can read and write basic and can converse well just like anyone. That shows that he DOES process the same thing you and I see and hear. He just does everything a little slower as he may have to think about the next task (whereas you and I may do some of those things without even thinking)

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheese to you.

  2. Obviously it depends on the mental handicap in question.

Usually though the mental handicap will only affect a certain part of the brain. The rest of the brain will work perfectly usually.

If the mental handicap is for a reason besides a damaged area of the brain then the person will think exactly the same as usual but the messages from the brain to the body will be distorted or blocked.

  3. Why do so called normal people think that the mentally handicapped cannot be hurt or do not think what gives you that idea I wonder !!!! ?????
