  1. Why, are you lost?

If you have a magnet, a needle and a piece of thread you can magnetise the needle and make your own compass.

Or, find a tree because apparently moss grows on the North side of trees. This may not be true, though.

Personally, I'd look at the sun and sort of guess.

  2. Global Positioning System Electronics.

    Too many features to mention.

Compass, plumb line, and alternatives are quaint

    but have their uses.

  3. Sun rises in the east...moss...polaris...etc.

  4. At night, check the North Star, during the day - look at the sun and figure out East/West, and moss grows on the north side of a tree

  5. Head south and then turn around.

    Seriously, use the north star.

  6. If I were lost in the day id plant i stick in the ground and watch the shadow. find East to West and done, if at night Id lay on the ground align a tree leaf up with a star and find East and West done.

  7. keep walking,if you meet a penguin you are going the wrong way

  8. Moss grows on the north side of trees in the northern hemisphere and on the south in the southern hemisphere. At dawn the sun will rise in the east so face the sun and point left. At dusk the sun sets in the west so face the sun and point right.

  9. The rising sun will be on your right and the setting sun on your left, or magnetise a needle and gently float it on water and it will point north

  10. You can use your wrist watch. In the northern hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun. North will be approximately in the direction of the number six.

  11. moss generaly grows on north side of trees & large stones.

  12. At local noon, a vertical line (use a plumb bob) will cast a shadow due north.  Local noon time varies from 12:00 at the eastern edge of the time zone to 1:00PM at the western edge, so you need to compensate for good accuracy.

  13. Ask someone with a compass!

  14. If it's sunny, wait until noon, point your finger in the air and it's the direction your shadow is pointing.  If it's cloudy, ask.

  15. With an analogue watch in England point the watch so that the sun is halfway between the hour hand and 12 and the 6 points North the reverse is true in New Zealand on a cloudy day look for the side of buildings or trees and rocks where the most moss grows and that is the North side.
