How do neon Signs work?

Just wondering as i saw a pink sign the other day..How do they work and how cn you choose the different colours is it the temperature or is it another chemical?

Neon signs use neon gas with a mix of other gases to create different colors.  Sometimes the glass tube is just painted to create the different colors.  The colors from the gas mix is limited.  The light is produced by a high voltage from a transformer ionizing the gas inside the tube to glow.
