  1. They listen to police scanners and/or receive tips from police officers.

  2. Sometimes, most of the time really, they are foreign correspondents.

Reuters and the Associated Press, among other news outlets have bureaus in other countries to get the news worldwide. Writers, photographers, editors, etc. are sent to these countries to work.

Hope that helps answer your question.

  3. Most of it is generated by a press release. They then show up at the press conference called by the organization that sent out the press release to report on what was said as if it were news rather than just passing on of information. Some tips are gathered from listening to the radios used by police and fire agencies, but more and more large police departments are using computers and not radios, so that thwarts the "newsies". The TV operations have vans and trucks full of fancy electronic gear to bring you live pictures of events without the addition of any context or background as to what you are viewing. In short, it is "emo" news designed to grab your attention while they get set to cut to a commercial and sell you stuff.

  4. They frequentley call police stations or listen to police scanners.

  5. They take the news van to the press conference. Try to ask a few relevant questions that will not get them uninvited to the next news conference. Read and re-write the press release as if it were genuine news.

News rooms increasingly see investigative and foreign travel reports as an unnecessary cost. They are cutting costs and trying to increase viewership by sensationalizing stories that do not conflict with the many interests of their corporate sponsors and government agencies.

Bland, bland, bland... TV and radio and print are becoming nearly irrelevant. Search the Internet and use your good judgment to ascertain the truth.
