  2. I am diagnosed with OCD. For a long time my symptoms included, rearranging furniture (order and placement). It wasn't until after my father died, that these compulsions abruptly stopped. The best way to control the thoughts and urges with OCD in my view is with medication and therapy. The meds can help with the chemical imbalance part, and the therapy can help with awareness of symptoms and coping strategies. In my view, both therapy and medication are the best.

    I take Zoloft (100 mg) and this works well for me. But everyone is different. It would probably be best if you seek out and talk with a therapist and psychiatrist.

When you notice  something negative, such as: "I'm never going to get over this!" or: "Why am I always so pathetic/useless/such a loser?" or even: "I can't do this/will never get over this!", or a disturbing image, recognise that this is part of the mindset which will hold you back from progressing in your recovery.                                                                                                                                                                           Having identified and labelled it, I first visualise a large  "STOP!" sign, then I say to myself as forcefully as you can, even aloud in a big voice, if alone: "I know this tactic: GO AWAY FOR A WHILE !!!"

    You may want to use either: "ruse", "ploy", "game", or "trick", instead of "tactic". In the case of an image, visualise a large "STOP" sign, or your preferred version.                                                                                                                                           Some people go so far as to keep a wide rubber band in their pocket, then put it around their wrist, when they catch themselves backsliding, stretch and release it, as a method of reprogramming their mind sooner, but I don't regard it as being strictly necessary. Remember to remove it, afterwards, if you use this method.

It depends upon the individual.  Many will find themselves helped by those books you can find at the store which assist your brain in "reteaching" itself to think.  Other people may finds their obsessive thoughts to be debilitating to the point of not being able to socialize, hold a job, go out into the community.  If this is the case many of the SSRI drugs will help, particularly Paxil CR and Zoloft.  The most potent of the anti-obsessional agents is Anafranil (clomipramine); it is an tricyclic antidepressant from the 1960 era.  The side effects are more noticeable and prevalent, but the drug is best at stopping obsessive compulsive disorder.
