how/where do overstock retail stores get their merchandise? like tjmaxx and ross and marshall's etc. is there like a wall street of retail items or something?

  1. Well, the department store where I work will "salvage" items after a certain period of time.  This means that the items are still in perfectly good condition, but we need to get rid of them in order to make room for new stock.

    I would assume that these salvaged items are then sold to places like Ross; that way my store doesn't totally lose money on the items, and Ross and such can try to make money from them.


  2. All of their products come directly from either the manufacturer or the importer.  When a manufacturer is introducing a new item they often need the warehouse space to put the new stuff so they sell the old stuff at a discount to get rid of it.  Occasionally an importer will sell them new product at a deep discount because the importer has to buy a full container load to be profitable so if they sell half the container at their cost then they make money on the other half of the container.
