How do papers really get recycled?

I have tons and tons of paper that I need to get rid of, but I'm an environmental freak. The papers I need to throw out are all used up, that is, it is written of fully the front and back side. Can I still recycle it?

I recycle all my paper whether its written on or not- helps start the fire in the winter.

Paper that has been written on can be recycled.  Staples can be a problem if some are stapled together.

Typically, paper is chopped up and used in many different applications, mostly in other paper products or in insulation. It can also be treated and formed into building products such as decking.
