How do patches, fixes, and other software updates get synced and coordinated with mainline code?

  1. Modules get replaced, code gets patched (a jump is inserted, the new code is appended at the end, a jump at the end of the new code jumps back to the mainline code), the code is written for patching (FORTH code can replace a page without affecting anything else) ... There are a number of ways.
