If you print a periodical (free magazine, free weekly newspaper, etc) and X amount of people are reading it, then you can charge for advertising space based on that X amount.

Advertising - staff and printing costs = profit.

Replace "printing costs" with "web hosting", and this is also how many websites make a profit.
