Out of work for two years, I have applied and reapplied everywhere. I live in a small rural area. With gas prices so high, I can't afford to commute out. Pretty sad when a college grad is turned down at McDonald's? Very sad world we live in!! What are your thoughts?

  1. You need to move........sorry........sometimes the truth hurts.........

  2. Take public transportation to work . Also what about traveling out of your area since you live in a small town? Continue networking until a position opens up in your network. There has to be positions that open in your area if you are not familiar with other areas. Also, I am sure you have skills. College graduates can work anywhere besides Mcdonald's. Good luck at interviewing

You are not alone. I live in SF and it's hard to find jobs here as well. I spent 10 yrs as a business manager and 2 years as an educator and now   I have been unemployed for 3 months. I send out on average 15-20 resumes a day, am signed up with about 20 websites, 7 agencies, and I am still submitting walk-in applications.

If it makes you feel any better I didn't get a job at Starbucks as a barista and I am a college grad as well. It's just a c**p shoot and hopefully with enough networking and persistence we will both find the jobs we have been looking for. One thing I will say about one of the comments here is that one of them is right, you may have to relocate. I have been here for 9 years and am still open to the idea I may have to move to get work.

    Good luck with your search

  4. J... I just started back to work after being home for 10 years. This is my 2nd week working. When I decided it was time to go back to work, I woke up at the crack of dawn, got dressed nicely and hit all the stores, hotels, I could think of. I wanted to do front desk at a hotel but didn't rule out sales at a clothing store. I honestly filled out so many applications that my hand was hurting by the end of the day. I went to 15 places and wrote down where I went.

A week later managers sterted calling left and right. I went on 6 interviews and got offered 2 jobs after that. I took the one that was closest to where I live.

You have to be persistent and not give up. s***w McDonalds if they don't want to hire you. Keep looking. Go to the hotels near you and see if they need anyone for front desk. Even if you have to travel a little it will be worth it to get the h**l out of the house.

What I do isn't glamorous but I do get out and talk with other people and they give me money for it!!

Keep your chin up, don't get dicouraged and if it was meant to be, it will be. Good luck!!
