Question:

How do people find their hidden talents?

Do you believe that every person has some kind of talent, or are there just people that are more fortunate by being blessed with talent. Some people never feel they are capable of doing anything because they don't know their direction or what they could excel at. I am amazed at what many people have accomplished. Whether through music, authoring books, teaching, public speaking, artists, pro athletes, and many more, they are all truly amazing with their talents. Either in your own experience or others, what steps does a person take in order to find talents that have never been revealed? There are so many people that have talents that will never be found, due to not knowing how to go about bringing them to the surface and make the most of those talents. And another point, is it ever too late to find those talents and make things happen in ones life? Thanks to the wise Seniors that will be able to answer or share thoughts. Have a great day! :)

  1. Minnie mouse.

  2. Sometimes necessity- I learned how to improvise to do things I needed to do with very little money.

Sometimes having the time & means to do things you always wanted to do- Grandma Moses started painting late in life.

Two of my friends are part-time musicians, while still having full-time jobs.

I recently became disabled and started exploring photography & art work again.

It's not too late until you're dead!

  3. I personally think that every one does have a talent of some kind. Sad thing is some folks may go through life and never find that talent or might even not realize that what they do is a talent of some sort. Such as, one person can make a quilt and the next person can not do that, so in a sense, quilt making is a talent. Then you have a people that can dance, then you have people that can't dance, so again, in a sense dancing is a talent. So to me talent is simply something that one person can do that another person can not do. If you can make someone happy, that is a talent.

As far as if it is ever to late to find a talent, I think the only time that it would be to late to find that talent is the day you pass away.

  4. Jackie,

It is never too late.  I think we just live life and find that maybe we are good with helping others by talking to them, perhaps listening to them, or doing special things.  Some may have other things.  It just happens.  A Special talent could be something that does not seem special to us, but it is a treasure to others.  It might just be "Being there" for someone

  5. I am a firm believer that everyone has a talent.

I have found that most people who claim they don't know how to do anything are usually a treasure of talent.

Encouragement is the key and a willingness to share what you know, then let them put their own personal touch to it and watch them fly.

  6. This could be true although I am not a wise senior. Sister had a wonderful voice. She could hit the high notes without straining her vocal chords. She sang in the church choir for several years but would not sing solo. My talent was in writing. I wrote many stories in high school english for which we were graded on, not just grammar and punctuation but for imagination as well. To day I still enjoy writing. My dad told the most funny stories. He would have made a great stand-up comic.  Poppy

  7. Everyone has talents.  Fortune has nothing to do with it.

You must step out and try many things and see what fits you.  Take an art class, teach English as a second language, join a senior's softball team, take a trip with the senior center in your community, volunteer in the gift shop at your local state park.

The people with the talents you mention have dedicated their entire lives, often foregoing social contacts and events, to attain the level of

  8. by having enough guts to seek out challenges and trying to do new things!!!!

  9. when you are able to do naturally.

  10. I don't seem to have any.

  11. I believe that most of us have talent. Usually, this is expressed through our interests. Too often, people may overlook their talent if they don't have someone encouraging them to pursue it.

We ALL are a product of "God's purpose".

I posted the following story in my words a while ago.

  12. All people find your own talents.

  13. I once found I could slip, fall down, get back up, and never spill my beer

  14. I think the one thing that makes us not find our talents is fear. I teach art and I find that it is sad to see how many adults will share with me how they can't even draw a straight line. I tell them there are relatively few straight lines in art. I try to let my students explore their talents. Some actually discover talents in my class. You will never know unless you try. Don't let anyone and I mean Anyone tell you differently. We all have abilities. I find even though I may not sing well or play a musical instrument I have great taste in music. That is the extent of that talent and I am Ok with it.

  15. I love your question and agree that every person has some kind of talent.  By the time you get to our mature age group I would think there would be some clues to that hidden talent.  The athletes among us might have to settle for ping pong or golf if they want to excel.  Even Bret Farve is having a tough time getting back into football.  (laughing here)

Examine your dreams and what you do for enjoyment, what you do that pleases you and only you.  The tough part is getting out there and actually doing something with your talent.

I have a talent that has been in hiding for many years.  I can draw most any kind of picture.  Not the fine art type but story illustrations.  One of these days I'm going to draw pictures from my childhood memories.  My grandkids would love to see a drawing of grandma's pony bucking her off or grandma (as a child) sitting on top of an ice cream churn while her grandpa turned the crank.  One of these days!
