How do people get the houses/temples?

Question

I was wondering,how do people in Japan/China get the houses and or temples they live in?Did they buy them?Or was it passed down in their famiily through generations?

i think its the same as you get a house, only their houses look different and constructed (and styled) different, if they wish it... you can too for your house.
