In Spain, my country, we do a hand shake between men, two kisses on each cheek between women or between a man and a woman, and two kisses as well between relatives (if men, it depends on the relationship and confidence, for example, I kiss my father, my brother, some uncles and some cousins because we have closer relationship).

If friends and you haven't seen them for long time, it's typical a hug.

How do you greet somebody (unknown, friend, relative...) in your country?

  1. 'James.' took my answer. I was going to say a good swift kick in the balls. Good ol' USA.

  3. Here in Australia  We are a very multicultural country so it is really impossible to give a general answer some kiss on the cheek some say G'day and shake your hand it really depends on the background of the person. although i don't think we're as affectionate as other countries

  4. I live in the United States and I greet my Armenian friends like I did in my old country. We do it similar to yours. We shake hand and one kiss on each cheek. Goes for men and women. We only do it to family and close friends.

  5. England

Between men - nod say hi

    between women - hug

woman and a man - sometimes a kiss on the cheek

    relatives - hug kiss smile

  6. I live in Hungary and it is pretty much like your customs in Spain.

It is even more formal here because there are certain ways of saying hello to people.

An older man or women you say hello to with words that translate to,"I kiss your cheek," someone your own age and a friend is a causual word for hi and a stranger, very formal words are used.

I made a few big mistaks learning things here in the past, I once said a causual hello to a 80 year old lady and once I said I kiss your cheek to a young man. I was very embarrased when I relized my mistakes.

It makes me sometimes shy to say hello to anyone out of fear of saying the wrong thing.

  7. well its the typical handshake for all people, hugs in our traditional culture are frowned upon but due to westernisation theyve become pretty common here albeit slightly uncomfortable if its a girl and older men also society doubts hugs betwen opposite sexes but they are very common now. Its basically a hug for relatives and i must admit i feel slightly akward hugging my dad but i hug him when theres an ocassion but not all my uncles especially not those who live in the countryside they could embarass you

  8. We put our hands together at chin level, slightly bend our head forward and say 'Sawadi Kop' if you're a male or 'Sawadi Ka' if you're a female.
