  1. I just got back from my second visit to Tunisia and I saw a lot of the 'real' Tunisia this time, not the touristy parts. I can completely understand what you are saying! However I went out and around with Tunisian friends and things are just different - they are happy and content with the way life is there!! It would be wonderful to be able to live at that pace of life, but I don't think I could ever give up the things I have become accustomed to here!! There is a lot of importance placed on things that SHOULD be important, being close to your family and friends... and I think they just do what they can with whatever they have! I love Tunisia and can't wait to go back!!!!

  2. Tunisians are great!!

It's called adaptation. As the culture and climate is so different their way of life would be different. Everyone would dream of techy stuff maybe but life isn't always about that.

When i stayed in Marhaba Palace in Sousse, most people depend on tips for their work in the hotel. They get enough to keep alive but although they may not have everything, there are still friends and family to support them. At least education is free and compulsory!

  3. I've lived in Tunisia for over 5years as an expat. I have lots of tunisian friends who are very happy with the way their lives are. I understand what you are trying to say, its very difficult to think of a life without half a dozen t.v's, dvd's, playstation etc, in your house. However, tunisians spend a huge amount of time with their families, which is something that we don't do in the west. They also have a really community where they hang out with each other. When was the last time you said to your whole family (and I mean whole family, mum, dad, kids, grandparents aunts, uncle's etc) come over on friday night and we'll have a bbq???

Tunisia has internet cafe's for people who want to surf the net and they have computers in schools etc. and I guess if they had the money they would buy them but i doubt they'd be glued to them like we are.

As for the food? well, Tunisian's have the best fruit and veg I have ever had. It is bought daily so is super fresh and its seasonal so when you bite into a tomato it actually tastes like a tomato and has been grown down the road. Tunisians are on the whole welcoming and helpful and really know how to party!! Unlike us British who don't think we've had a good time unless we wake up with a bad head!

I just spent 2 months back in the uk and thought the same as you......how can people live like this? Everything is geared up to make you spend money. Playstations, Nintendo's, T.v, Dvd's, the latest phone and new toy for kids and grown-ups alike. Then there's the food! most fruit and veg comes from abroad and costs a bomb and tastes of nothing. The uk is cold and full of grumpy people who seem to love to complain about everything from the weather to the price of fish. Don't get me wrong I love the uk, it's just a different way of life here with different priorities.

I hope I answered your question?? and I'm very glad you love tunisia, it really is a great place to visit and an even better place to live ;0)

  4. It is common for people to have home computers and/or laptops. It is becoming more of a necessity due to the internet being so prevalent for school studies and jobs. For those who do not have computers, they go to a publinet, which is an internet cafe. For one hour, they pay 1D500.

Tunisians place a high value on family and study. This is why you will find most enjoy spending their time with their families. I actually like how Tunisians live a simple yet peaceful and happy life. They know how to relax, unwind and enjoy the things that they have in life, and are truly happy.

As for the food you see in the hanouts, and fast food places, they are for Tunisians what McDonalds, and other fast food places are for others.

Prices here in Tunisia are considered cheap to visitors because the whole cost of living is low. The average monthly income for Tunisians is between 200-500TND. because of that, it goes without saying that everyday things are going to be cheap - there is not high inflation here.

Tunisia is still growing and developing. I am sure that within the next 10-20 years Tunisia will be caught up with and as 'modern' as most European countries. I just hope that when that happens Tunisians do not take the small things for granted and do not loose their ability to be happy and content with what they have.
