How do photographic portraits differ from painted portraits?

  1. Obviously the skill level is greater in a painted portrait.

    Anyone can take a photo.

Well, once upon a time, a photographic portrait was a "slice of life", it was frozen in time, there was little that the artist could do to alter or edit the image that was recorded from real life.  Unlike the painted portrait, which depended on the technical skill of the artist for its verisimilitude, and which the artist could freely alter to "improve" nature.

    But with the development of digital photography and programs like Photoshop, there is no distinction whatsoever other then the technical aspects of the media.
