  1. They stand up, they meet tummy to tummy.

I guess like humans at a drunken wedding reception in the parking lot?

But truly, tummy to tummy, standing up!

  2. That is such a good question.  Have you seen the baby ones?  They have quills too.  Imagine giving birth to those?  Ouch!!  That's puzzling too.

  3. Contrary to popular belief, porcupines do NOT mate belly-to-belly. They mate belly-to-back, with the male mounting the female from behind. She lowers her quills and flips her tail up over her back to make this easier. Confusion may stem from the fact that part of the courtship ritual involves the pair standing on their hind legs, facing each other, while the male sprays the female with urine. This is not the position in which the act of mating takes place.

  4. The stock answer is "Verrrrry carefully."

Seriously, they have s*x standing and belly to belly. The male urinates on the female, which is supposed to soften the belly quills, which are finer than the ones on the back anyway.

  5. Because of its quills, mating is a tricky process. A male serenades a female with grunts and low humming, an overture that's often rejected with loud squeals. If the female is ready to breed however, the two approach each other in a "love dance", standing on their hind feet while whining and grunting. The pair will place paws on each other's shoulders, rub noses and, quite frequently, belt each other to the point of knocking the other one down. During mating, the porcupine relaxes so its quills stay close to the body and out of harm's way. The male makes sexual contact from behind the female. The spines of both animals are relaxed and lay flat.
