How do psychedelic drugs work?

Question

how do psychedelics such as DMT, shrooms, salvia, LSD work? I've always been curious on what makes you trip, I want to know the science behind psychedelic trips. The only psychedelic I have done is legal, and that is salvia and I saw a lot of crazy indescribable things, and life just turned very strange. Now I would like to know why it does that, and how it does it, so If anyone could explain it to me I'd greatly appreciate it
