How do psychologists explain the effects of television violence?

  1. Environment is a very crucial part of develomental behavior.  While it is proven that brain stimulation in the form of games does "exercise" the brain, games that are ultra violent can be a stimulus for behavioral issues if the person is not taught that it is a "game".  It is the "I see, I do" complex.  Therefore, if a child is to watch or play games that include violence with out being told that this is "fake" the results could lead to issues down the line.  A good example that this is becoming an issue is harming animals, acting out in a negative behavioral light in school or around peers and repeats of what they have seen.  Television violence is really only as bad as the parents that alow their children to watch it with out understanding the material.  Just as an example, say that a child grows up in a household where there is physical abuse.  That child is more likely to then cause physical abuse down the line to his/her spouse and child.  Again... I see, I do.  


  2. With empirical evidence.  Try looking some of the studies up on google scholar, there are hundreds of them.
