Question:

How do "we" really know the official wait time for celebrities' adoptions?

Is there some fact sheet anywhere? Did they officially say that their wait time was a certain time? I know for a fact that some people thought I decided to adopt and went to pick my child up all in the span of a month or so, and that's just because I didn't tell many people the details of when my wait started and all. From beginning to pick up it took me about a year and a half or a little less.

  1. anyway why can't we just be happy for them

why do we always hate it when somebody else gets what we want

everybody uses whatever they have at their disposal to get what they want

it doesn't mean it was unethical

  2. Ok, not related, but kinda silly.

I really did go from considering adoption, someday way in the future, maybe....to.... a mom to a little boy 2 months later.

I informed my work immediately through FMLA just in case. I told them on a Saturday that I felt he would be born the next day and not to expect me to be there for a few months. He was born the next day and I called in on Monday and they really couldn't believe it and they were even more shocked that i wasn't coming into work.  I Always put my kids first and THEY HATE IT! OH well.

  3. I don't think we can.  It is all only speculation.

However, when Meg Ryan adopted from China, there was a lot of talk about how she had to wait just as long as everyone else.  I don't see a lot of celebrities adopting from China, so I think that China may not give special allowances for celebrities.  I would think China just doesn't care about a celebrity from the United States.

  4. Why do you care what celebrities' wait time is? You've got your wait time, that's all that matters.

  5. The only adoption I know for sure that circumvented the regular process was Madonna's adoption in Malawai.  The process of that country is a considerable residency requirement in-country, which I believe is six months.  Madonna was able to get that requirement waived by a judge.

This is a big "red flag" for me because I believe that if someone chooses to adopt in a country, that person should respect that country's laws and not try to get exceptions made for them.  I know quite a few PAPs will fly to a country and harass the local governments to get their case pushed to the front of the line, so to speak.

For the other adoptions, we don't know for sure what the wait time was, unless they say so in an interview.  It could be that the announcement of intending to adopt is "released" only a month or two before the adoption, while in fact the person had in the adoption process for a long time before.

  6. I always wonder the same thing.  I hope they have to wait like we do but how knows.  I too didn't tell everybody until we were closer to the actual adoption that we were adopting.

  7. We don't have any way of knowing when the paperwork was submitted as far as I can see.

The only way to know would be whether or not the person fulfilled the residency requirement (if that requirement exists and is long enough that the celebrity's presence in the country would be noticed.)

Of course, countries might choose to waive the residency requirement for someone famous out of sheer self-preservation, given the hoards of photographers and journalists who would descend like locusts, and the infrastructure that would be needed to support them. It could put a strain on the country's resources. I could see an official waiving the requirement because it would be too disruptive to the area, whether or not the prospective adoptive parent even asked them to.

So no, we can't be sure what went on behind closed doors.

  8. You don't know when they actually applied for adoption. All you know is when the adoption was final. And if it wasn't for the press invading their lives you wouldn't know anything about them. Maybe everyone should just worry about their own lives and not worry about what they do. A bit of jealousy I would bet.
