  1. The program directer picks the music to be played. it is loaded into a program that shows in the dj studio.

The program director picks the music with their music surveys and or ratings of the songs.

the dj say something about what is going on with the station something out of a liner book.. or they front sell or back sell the song. telling you who sung the song and the song name...

or they say what ever they want if they said the correct liners that the program direct and sales dictate.

if you hear a dj say next ... their going to commercials...

"coming up next we will hear xyz but first let me tell you about.......................... we will be back with xyz here on (station)

  2. The majority of radio stations don't allow the announcers to pick out their own music.  The announcer's job is to provide an element of entertainment between the songs.

The station's management will use various forms of research from charts and listener requests to determine what songs will be on the station's playlist.

The program director or music director will use a computer program, like Selector or Music Master, to "schedule music".  Most likely the songs you hear on a station have been scheduled the day before.

The data from the scheduling program is then uploaded to a computer in the studio that will play the songs on the air.  These studio computers are like a real expensive Ipod.  They use the data from the scheduling software to automatically play MP3 or Wave files in a predetermined order, kinda like a playlist.  The most widely used computer systems are Scott Studios and NextGen and they cost more than a new car.  Hardly any stations play CDs anymore.

The announcers should talk about station promotions and local events, about what's happening in pop culture like American Idol or the latest movie, inform people what the artists are doing and air calls from listeners called "phoners".

Most the time when you hear a listener on the air with talking to the announcer it was prerecorded.  However some morning shows will use equipment to delay the audio by a few seconds so they can air live calls.  If someone curses the announcer can "dump" the audio before the bad word hits the air.

Each station might execute these things a little different, but they all pretty much follow the same basic principles.
