  1. radio countdown shows use charts such as billboard or radio and records Nielsen/BDS charts to know what songs to play.

These charts depending upon the chart used for the countdown are usually based upon how many times the song has been played over the air in a weeks time.. meaning the number 1 song is usually the most played and most heard song in the nation for that format (music type)

Some use cd or music downloads also, but most countdown shows use radio airplay only as a guage of what songs are the popular songs in the nation.

for example of charts I am talking of...

but the songs go up and down usually upon audience reaction either by testing (ratethemusic.com) or by requests to the radio stations

  2. It's also interesting that MOST songs never reach the #1 position.  Some songs stay at #1 for weeks, while others only get to the top 5 or top 10 position.  A lot of songs just get stuck in the 20's and go away to never be heard from again.    Another thing that is interesting is how some songs REACH the #1 position on a chart, but when it comes to Soundscan, the way of measuring the sales success of a record, that same #1 song can sell less records that a song further down the chart!

It's all a crazy game!  And the more and more  with new ways of getting music into the hands (or ears) of listeners evolve, the less any of this will matter.  And that is terrifying for the labels!
