  1. Scholarships are money awards given to qualified students who apply for them. Generally, the student has to meet certain criteria, fill out an application or write an essay, and submit verification of their enrollment in some college once they've received a scholarship. The money usually goes directly to the school - you don't handle it or decide how to spend it.

There are tons of scholarships online - try Fastweb.com or just do a search for scholarships. You'll get pages and pages of results.

Colleges also give out scholarships for students with outstanding grades, ACT/SAT scores, talent in a particular area, or for legacies. Look on your college's website for details - each one's a little different.

Finally, a lot of local scholarships are available. I live in a small town, and we had upwards of 100 scholarships given out by local companies and groups and the school itself.

You'll learn a lot more about this as soon as you enter your junior and senior years of high school - it's a pretty complex process sometimes, but you will get walked through it along with everyone else.

  2. To look for information about scholarships, wait till you get to high school because you will be able to get that information from your high school conselor. I will be starting my freshman year in a few days but if you had a Careers Class like my old middle school did, you could probably get information about scholarships there, our teacher gave us loads of information.
