How do schools determine if i'm going to be in average classes or in gifted? ?

I just came out of a private school and my grades were terrible. The reason i even passed was because i went to summer school. I did'nt do bad in school because i had any type of mental problem. I would actually say I'm pretty smart. My s.a.t scored were above average in some subjects and in other either average. My question is do they determine my grades by looking into my previous report card or my s.a.t scores?

you have to take a test to be in the gifted program but the school determines lik smart or "dumb" classes by behavior and grades and sometimes attendence
