How do search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, Ask etc make any money?

Some companies pay a premium and they get put to the top of the top of  any search. That's why sometimes the page you get when you have searched isn't relevant to what you asked

Ever notice the ads on banners and off to the side?  Those aren't free.  Search engines make lots o' money from those.

I pay Google so much a month to display my website near the top of the list when various search words are used.

The more I pay, the more I am at the top of the list.
