While their salaries might be modest, their pork barrels are awefully gargantuan. These funds, though taxpayers' money, are untouched by and exmpted from auditing and are therefore free to be squandered and pocketed. Since the senators make the law of the land, they make sure that these laws are favorable to them. Why, they are even immune from the law that they make.
