  1. Warp engine -- anti-matter matter reaction to energy to generate warp field for faster than light travel.

Impulse drive -- a fusion reactor, an accelerator-generator, a driver coil assembly and a vectored thrust nozzle to direct the plasma exhaust.

  2.   Warp drive.

  3. There are two ways that the ships are made to move:

    (a) The older ones were scale models, far smaller than an actual ship. Usually the method for making them "move" was just to shoot them with a moving camera. Once a fake background of stars is added, the sensation can be pretty convincing.

    (b) They now use computer rendering, in which case they just render it from a different position. Voila!

So I guess you could say that they're both quite stationary...

Or oh, do you mean the imaginary physics?

In that case, for sublight, they would use some kind of energy propulsion. The closest we have are ion thrusters:

For "warp speed", there are lots of ideas presented on the show, that basically try to be more sophistocated as the show (and science) progresses.

Basically, they make a "warp bubble", that allows them to move through "subspace". Supposedly, faster movement is possible in subspace. Why is it faster, and what is subspace? You've got me.

  4. all chief Engineers are required to eat a high fiber diet full of legumes.

these flammable intestinal gasses ignite and propel the spacecraft

(you do know this show was FICTION, right?)

  5. There are three methods of propulsion for a ship in Star Trek. Maneuvering thrusters for slow, delicate movement. Impulse engines for basic interplanetary travel at sub-light speeds. Warp engines for interstellar travel and faster-than-light speeds.

  6. The whole engine idea is supposed to be a hybrid engine combining a bussard ramjet with and anti-matter drive, a huge magnetic scoop is projected in front of the space ship to gather hydrogen molecules that are combined with anti-matter to some how move that ship, this engine work for impulse speed and warp speed in the movies.
