Because they decrease the amount of force we need to do work.

There are many ways it can be transformed. Some examples are:

electric energy -> heat energy and/or light energy (for instance, a light bulb)

light energy -> electric energy (i.e. solar power)

electric energy -> mechanical energy -> sound energy (an ipod, perhaps)
