How do small feet help sprinting?

  1. Hmm.  I have heard this a few times on this message board.  First, short muscles have an advantage over longer muscles.  That is why power activities tend to have shorter athletes (gymnasts, sprinters, etc).  But basically the physics are helpful as well as how close together the centromeres are, etc.

    Maybe this is why people think that small feet help.  Also, the smaller the foot, perhaps the less likely you would plantarflex (or perhaps slightly less likely to do so, but I feel this is reaching).  I have not seen anything in my many years coaching that would make me believe that foot size would help.
