How do snakes actually make their hissing noises?

  1. Well, basically - by compressing their lungs which run most of the length of thier body very quickly, and expelling air.

    How do YOU hiss?  Same deal.

    BTW?  The tongue is for scenting their environment.  It doesn't aid/hinder hissing at all.
