Well if they did not they would never reproduce.

The male will climb over the female, laying his body the length of hers. He then entwines his tail, lifts hers up if she doesn't do it already and inserts the hemipenes into her cloaca.  They usually remain hooked up for about 20 minutes and then they separate and go their own ways.
