How do some web sites automatically know my home town? Can I stop this from happening?

  1. They know where you are connecting to the internet from by the IP address for your internet connection.  There are some ways to "spoof" an IP address, but why would you really want to do that anyway?


  2. first of all.....why would you want to stop that? It's to make life easier for you.

    as far as how they know....i'm not positive on this, but I'm guessing it is reading your ip address and then knows where abouts in the country you are.  Some websites save the information from the last time you went, like weather.com or even yahoo for example.  Yahoo always shows the town i'm in even if i'm not logged in.  It is stored in memory and isn't worth worrying about.
