How do squids move? What propels them to move forward?

  1. Squids can move by two methods:

    They breathe in water through gills and squirt is out through a tube called a siphon. They can point this siphon away from the direction they want to go and use it like a jet to drive them through the water.

    They also have a sort of a skirt around their body which they can ripple by muscular control to do small movements. They use this for steering around short distances.


  2. Gnomon is right, except that the siphon jet drive is used only for escape or evasion and the rippling fins are used for most other movements, but squid can also pull themselves along using their tentacles.
