If you go to rocky beaches and look for sea stars at low tide, you'll find that they are under rocks and in little pools of water.  Therefore, even at low tide, sea stars are submerged in enough water for diffusion of oxygen to occur.  You will also notice that sea stars aren't found high in the intertidal and you generally need to show up during a really low low tide to see them.


  2. The body cavity of echinoderms, the class to which starfish belong acts as a simple circulatory and respiratory system. Respiratory gases and food particles can move freely within the coelom. Many echinoderms have skin gills that aid in respiration and waste removal. The fingerlike skin gills increase surface area through which gases and wastes pass from the animal’s body (Johnson, 2001).
