  1. If by "AFL2" you are referring to the second-tier leagues such as the SANFL, VFL and WAFL, then yes, most of these players need to have other employment, as playing at this level does not pay what a full-time job would - because playing at this level is not a full-time job, as opposed to playing AFL, which is a full-time job. Some players in these state league are contracted to AFL teams however, and as such would be getting paid considerably more than their VFL or WAFL teammates. As a guide, the salary cap for the SANFL clubs is $350,000 a season. Consider that on the senior roster, there is typically more than 50 players when you include the reserve teams, and you can see that the money does not stretch that far. Take out the wages of the AFL-contracted players, and the young and reserve-team players, and it leaves a little bit more for the senior players, but not an awful lot, and not enough to support a family for example. Playing state-league is very much a part-time job for most players, with more requiring other employment, with exceptions being students and the like.

  2. "so little"

the top players make over 500,000 a year

even a rookie gets atleast 50,000 a year, which is better than quite a few jobs

afl is a business now and being a player is a fulltime job and pays as such. in the old days, players used to have part-time jobs

but now, as training methods get more intense and technical, there is no time because players often train more than four times a week

  3. Most make a lot of money from their contracts but also from their endorsements.

A lot do work in land development, real estate, studying, buying and selling pubs etc.
