And other Asian races such as Vietnamese, Korean, etc. Because I would like to be able to tell the difference at a glance, just like Asians usually can. Thanks.

  1. Do you mean how do they differ? The differences are very slight and even for Asians it is not always possible to tell.

  2. We can't tell all the time. I'd say about 70-85% of the time we can tell based on appearance. It can vary. Cambodians and Filipinos have darker skin color. I'd say Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese will most likely have lighter skin, though not all do. There are slight differences but they do not apply all the time. You have to be around a lot of Asians to familiarize yourself with the variation. The last names can usually give the ethnicity away.

some Chinese last names: Chan, Chau, Wong, Wang, Chang

Vietnamese, Ngyuyen, Vu, Doan, Pham, Li, Tran, Du, Ho

Korean: Kwan, Choy, Cho, Kim, Pak, Park

Japanese: Fujioki, Kimura, Hirara, Hoshi, Imada, Ishida, Matsuo

But sometimes there are last names that more than one Asian ethnicity will use. For example, there are Chinese and Vietnamese people with the last name Lam. It's in the pronunciation. If you don't have a good knowledge of how each Asian language sounds, then you can't tell based on last name. We can tell what ethnicity someone is based on his/her last name. It is usually a good indication and is usually correct.
