How do the automatic locking shopping carts work?

At one of the malls near my house they have many stores that say this cart will not go into the parking lot or past the yellow lines on street. I don't remember them digging up the street to put something electrical down. Anyone know how they work?

yes if you see in the end of the parking lot there's like something like a line... this is the sensor!
