How do the bus shopping trips from Canada to the States work exactly? like Customs and everything?

Shopping trips are not so attractive these days. If you drive over to Buffalo you can save some percentage in taxes and some part in rates. But the over all cost of going and the time consumed it makes sense if you plan on spending a minimum of $500 or more.

The other question is the limit to bring back is not so much if you do not stay for a night.

Here is the link to the Canadian Border Services Agency which will give you all the information about clearing customs.  For each 24 hour absence from Canada you can bring back $50 in goods without paying duty.  If you are away for 48 hour you can bring back $400 worth of goods, and if you are away for 7 days or more you can bring back $750 worth of goods.  The customs officials will ask you what you bought.  You should keep all receipts.  You will have to pay duty if you have bought more than your allowed amount.  Best of luck.
