I have always wanted to know how the long electric cables get put up on the street pilons, and how do they do it as some are miles apart.

  1. The cable starts on a drum ..

Helicopters are used to string cables between pylons in difficult terrain ..

Pylons are not communally 'miles apart' .. the max. distance (span) between pylons is in the order of 1.5km and this is only possible with very high pylons (or between 2 mountain peaks).

  2. a leader rope comes first through a pulley system

and no - I don;t believe they are miles apart

maybe a couple hundred yards at the most

when there is sufficient rope out - a winch tightens up and

pulls the wire off the reel - through the pulleys - and at the proper time

tension is held - the pulleys are disassembled - and the wires attached to the respective poles

and when all is hooked up - then the power lights up

    all the best
