  1. The basic thing is this:

A natural forest is a complex ecosystem with interrelated plants and animals.

Clearcut that, and you will never get it back as a functioning thing.

Clearcuts on "tree farms" are OK.  There's not that much there to worry about.  Clearcutting a natural forest ruins it forever.  Thoughtful selective logging can allow it to heal.

  2. I suppose the chainsaws turn gasoline into CO2 and various

    toxic pollutants.

However, that's not the real issue.

The real issue is that trees are arguably the best method of trapping

    CO2 to counter human emissions.

They also provide shelter to a host of other life, the balance of which

is required to keep animal and plant equilibrium.

Its not that cutting down the forrest pollutes - its that cutting it down

stops the planet from recovering from other pollution.

  3. I assume you can talking locally so I won't launch into a tirade about CO2 and global warming.  I've spent a lot of time in logged areas and can speak with some authority on this issue.

Loggers pollute by littering.  One always finds empty beer cans, potato chip bags, empty chain oil bottles, motor oil containers, tree marking spray paint cans, etc.  It is not uncommon to find wire rope choke cables lying abandoned in logged areas.

Logged areas have greater run off than uncut areas.  They are criss-crossed with cat tracks and skid roads and the run off picks up loose dirt and carries it into streams.

Ironically, this has a good side here in the Pacific Northwest's eastern Cascade Mountains, where selective rather than clear cutting is the norm:  Freshly logged areas often have huge fruitings of morel mushrooms the year after logging!

(Clear cutting is a west side practice in Douglas Fir forests.)

  4. They bulldoze the trees into big piles which are then burned.  Open burning is illegal in the City of Houston but can be done in the unincorporated areas surrounding.

Trench burners are used to accelerate combustion and reduce smoke.  A trench is dug, wood waste is dumped and set on fire.  A large fan is used to blow air on the fire which speeds up the burn rate.
