  1. The link is a description of how land reclamation is done after a mine closure.  Pages 14 and 15 have a flowchart which explains the process.


  2. The miners don't do anything. The company may, however, hire a company that does reclamation. Generally, this involves adding organic matter to the soil and replanting plus treating the water that flows out of the mine. The acid water can be loaded with chunks of limestone, which will last for a few years (cheap) or it can be directed to an artificial wetland, which will treat the water for many years (expensive).

    The old coal mine sutes that I've seen were rehabilitated in a shoddy but legal manner.
