  1. The sheet music in front of them actually has all the information about what to play and when.  Even their down time (called rests) are mesured out in number of beats, so they can count and know when to come in.  The conduct waving his wand helps them keep track of the beat. This means the members of the band no when to come in even when they aren't cued.

  2. Generally, any combination of reading the sheet music in front of them, by memory, or watching the conductor, who signals them with motions toward them and/or eye contact when their time comes.  Hope that helped.

  3. they read the music that's in front of them and keep count with the beats that the conductor or the percussion give

  4. The conductors hands are doing more than simply moving! An orchestra is made of different sections horn, strings, drums etc etc. The musicians dont have the complete musical scores in front of them,  each musician has only the parts of the score that he/she is to play, the conductor queues each musician or section when to play their part!

  5. They follow the music on the sheet and if they have loads of bars of rest then they count the beats and bar, watch the conductor for timing and hopefully he will signal to bring them in as well if they have a big entry.
