  1. The odds are with the casino.  That is how they build casinos and staff them.  The casino wins the majority of the time and keeps the money.  Of course some people win once in a while to keep people coming back.  The negative is that the casino is going to win your money and you are going to lose.  Another negative is that the people who can least afford to lose money gambling are some of the most likely people to do so.  Poor people who are not well educated and do not understand the odds against them will do tragic things with their money in casinos.  People actually can become addicted to gambling.  For them it is like a drug.  They have to have the thrill of the gamble and as the disease progresses they must gamble more to feel the thrill.  These poor suckers end up losing everything.  Another negative to gambling is that it sucks the money out of a community.  money that used to be spent on other things is now put into the casino.  That impacts the economy and people lose jobs.  If you would like some more negatives about gambling I would throw in that a lot of gambling establishments are under the control of criminals.  They frequently are used as fronts to launder dirty money.  They also become havens for prostitution and drugs.  No matter how you look at it gambling fosters a social attitude of winning is everything and money is the biggest prize in life.  Gambling is an attempt to hit the big payoff through luck, not get paid for performing a needed skill.  Well I haven't cited any statistics here for you, but I have given you my personal opinion on how the negatives of gambling can outweigh the postives.  Hope this helps.

  2. The negatives only outweigh the positives on individual scales. If a person ruins his life because he can't control his gambling, then, for him (and anyone else he's hurt from it) the neg outweighed the pos. If a person can use self control, then he can gamble and not have it ruin his life.

  3. It depends on the type of gambling.

For example, the most 'negative' form of gambling, according to a govt report from almost a decade ago, are state-run lotteries.  They provide very little community benefit (tax revenue, job creation), they prey most on those least able to afford it, the 'entertainment return' (the fun you have whether you win or lose) is far lower than other forms, the payouts are notoriously lower than other forms of gambling.

Online gambling is nearly as bad, plus it lends itself much more readily to more addictive behaviours.  It does, however, have a better payout percentage.

'Brick and Mortar' gambling (casinos, horse or dog tracks) are the most beneficial, in that they generate tax revenues, increase traffic for surrounding area businesses and provide much more entertainment value.  However, contrary to the Las Vegas myth, crime rates DO increase when new gambling establishments come into a community, and gambling addiction does as well.

Gambling addiction, which is a real threat with all forms of gambling, is one of the most destructive addictions to families.  Frequent gamblers tend to be compulsive liars, although it's usually in a harmless "Yea, I'm a little up ... no, I wasn't bluffing" way; as they slip further toward addiction, the lies become more serious, money gets pulled out of joint accounts, days at work get cut for casino side trips, $5 football bets become five $20 bets, then five $100 bets, then 15 $100 bets ....

Still, as 'negative' as the negatives are, it's not clear whether they outweigh the positives.  There is entertainment value, there is job creation and tax revenue, it does revitalize cities, and people enjoy it.

You'll have to fill out the research yourself to really form a good comp paper.

  4. I would suggest searching the internet.

But for one people often stake everything only to walk out of a casino in debt.
